Texas Bans Cruel Hunting Practices to Preserve Mountain Lions

Texas has made a groundbreaking move to defend its mountain lions, which have faced significant threats in recent years. For the first time, the state is implementing regulations designed to ensure the safety and survival of these majestic animals in the wild.

Starting September 1, 2024, Texas will ban “canned hunting.” This practice involves capturing mountain lions, holding them in confined spaces, and then releasing them for hunters to kill easily. Until now, canned hunting was legal in Texas, but this new regulation aims to end this cruel practice.

In addition to the ban, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission has introduced a requirement that traps set for mountain lions must be checked at least every 36 hours. This is crucial to prevent trapped lions from suffering from dehydration, starvation, or injury. Traps left unchecked for long periods can cause severe distress to these animals.
